Craniosynotosis
The early (pre-mature) closing of the sutures of the bones in the skull. Premature fusing of the sutures restrict and distort the growth of the skull. This can result in inter-cranial pressure, which can cause delays, head aches, vision problems, and in severe cases, mental retardation. The head will grow in an abnormal shape and cannot correct itself. Surgery is needed to do this. There are several types of craniosynostosis depending on which suture (or sutures) are fused. Saggital Suture (the most common), Metopic Suture, Coronal Suture, and Lambdoid Suture. There are different types of surgery to correct this: Traditional (CVR) Cranial Vault Reconstruction, and also in younger children the Endoscopic Surgery-This is a less invasive surgery done by the use of an endoscope.
